چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Sexual and reproductive health information, as a form of empowerment, especially in situations where ability of certain groups to access information is restricted, can support youths to delay sexual debut, choose ‘lower risk’ partners and better protect themselves during sex. This, in turn, can reduce risk for HIV, HSV-2 and other STIs, while also preventing unwanted pregnancies and mortality related to young age of child-bearing in females. Achieving higher levels of sexual and reproductive health literacy also yields multiple benefits beyond health. This review study was conducted to determine the reproductive and sexual health information in young people of Iran. Methods: Review of literature was performed through extensive searching in ISI, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases. The keywords that were used for searching were; sexual, reproductive health, information, education, health promotion, youth, young, adolescents, teens, teenagers. We transferred found articles to the End Note software by two authors while supervised by a third person. Results: Among the 1036 articles surveyed, 42 met inclusion criteria finally. Findings showed that bothmen and women and especially single men were low to moderately knowledgeable about reproductive health including genital anatomy, sexually transmitted infections and contraceptive use. The majority of respondents had positive attitudes towards implementing educational programs on sexual and reproductive health issues for young adults especially far earlier than marriage time. Conclusions: The relatively high prevalence of sexual activity and the lack of appropriate knowledge regarding reproductive health and contraceptives pose a significant threat to the sexual and reproductive health of youths in Iran. Findings indicate that most adolescents have an unmet need for reproductive health services or available services are not friendly to them conclusively, necessity and importance of implementation of up-to-date and need-based educational programs including a variety of teaching and learning strategies such as skills to make safe sexual decision among youths of Iran is felt more than past.
