Effects of hydro alcoholic extract of Prangos Ferulaceae on normal Blood pressure of rat

Introduction: The medicinal plant of Prangos Ferulacea is used in the treatment of various diseases in traditional medicine. Recent research also shows some of its therapeutic properties, although its effects on blood pressure are not clear.Methods: Twenty eight male Wistar rats (250-300 gr) were randomly divided into 4 experimental group including control and treatments groups. Animals were anaesthetized with sodium thiopental (80 mg / kg, ip) and femoral artery and vein catheterized. Then hydro alcoholic extract of Prangos Ferulaceae(12.5, 25 & 50 mg/kg) or its vehicle (saline) was injected intravenously and arterial blood pressure and heart rate were recorded. Results: Intravenous administration of extract of Prangos Ferulacea (12.5, 25 and 50 mg/kg) resulted in a significant decrease in arterial blood pressure from 107.8 to 72.5, from 103.9 to 65.1, and from 102.4 to 40.83 respectively (p <0.001). There was a significant difference between dose of 50 and 12.5 mg of extract (p <0.001). Prangos Ferulacea has no significant effect on Heart rate. Conclusion: Since intravenous Prangos Ferulacea administration reduces blood pressure, it seems to be beneficial in the treatment of hypertension.
