Municipal solid waste management in Zanjan city

Zanjan city with a population of about 350000 Person, generate about 0.4-0.7 kg/ per day per person of Municipal Solid Waste) MSW(, and about 265 tons of MSW are daily collected, transported and landfilled. The municipality of Zanjan is being responsible for Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM). The waste is mainly landfilled, with a small part of it usually being recycled by trash pickers and municipality workers. Composting is not introduced yet in Solid Waste Management) SWM (in Zanjan. The present study is aimed at evaluating the generation, characteristics and management of solid wastes in Zanjan city. Samplings of MSW in Zanjan city were carried out in three different seasons during autumn 2009 to spring 2010. In each season, 140 samples were collected and analyzed within a period of seven days (20 samples per day( and percentages of its main components were determined. The qualitative and quantitative results show that composting of MSW and recycling of paper, plastic, and glass are feasible in the studied area.
