Nowadays, power systems are facing new challenges, such as increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, in particular wind generation. The number of wind turbines connected to the grid is steadily increasing in recent years. This situation forced the revision of the electric utilities grid codes requirements, to remain connected during grid faults, i.e., to ride through the faults, and contribute to system stability during a wind range of network fault scenario. Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices can be a solution to these problems.This paper studies system stability of wind energy conversion system based on fixed speed induction generators (FSIG) and investigates the use of the static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) and static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) for WECS integration.It was found that the SSSC and STATCOM considerably improve the system stability during and after disturbances, especially when the network is weak. PSCAD/EMTDC software is used for simulation.
