Cancer and its Management Based on Traditional Persian Medicine

Cancer is the second cause of mortality in the world and it is very important. It causes disability. The prevalence of cancer is increasing in the world. Most of the cancer cases about 57% occurred in the developed countries. In Iran, it is increasing too. Cancer remedy is still a problem in the world. In recent years, researchers are using supportive and palliative care in cancer patients to increase the quality of life. There are some drugs in these cases in conventional medicine with many & chronic adverse effects without complete remedy. Usage of herbal drug according to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasing. Today, CAM is used by some of the cancer patients. Cancer was discussed by Traditional Persian medicine (TPM) literature in ancient times elaborately. In TPM books, cancer named Varam meaning swelling. The management of cancer in TPM is described based on four purposes, recommendations and prohibitions. Most of these recommendations are based on natural treatments with the herbal drugs. This study aimed to introduce some anti-cancer herbs from the TPM literature to help the cancer researchers to promote the quality of remedy in these patients. Material and Methods: This study, systematically reviewed some anti-cancer herbs in the TPM literature such as The Canon of Medicine with the new method in nine steps based on Mozaffarpoor article with the key words Varam-e-solb , Awram , Saratan from 2th to 14th century. Findings: The study found some herbs affecting on cancer such as Caladium, Cabbage, Black Nightshade and Dodder.Conclusion: Considering the lack of human intervention in the conducted surveys about cancer treatment, this study suggests approving the effective herbal drugs from these TPM books by clinical trials on cancer patients
