The effect of family-based intervention on FOCUS program on the quality of life in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy; a randomized clinical trial

Introduction & Aim: Patients with breast cancer have a lot of problems and they need support from their families. Family intervention based on FOCUS program has designed to support patients with breast cancer by their families. This study was aimed to study the effect of family intervention based on FOCUS program on the quality of life in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy in academic centers of Urmia, Iran in 2017. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial conducted on 60 patients with breast cancer who were randomly divided into intervention (N=30) and control groups (N=30). FOCUS program was a family-based intervention, including intervention in six sessions. The data collection tools of this study were demographic questionnaire and two standard questionnaires about quality of life (QLQ-C30, QLQ-Br23). The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Results: The findings revealed a significant promotion in all functional and symptomatic scales except economic status, general and specific questionnaires on the quality of life of patients with breast cancer for patients in the intervention group (P<0.05).Conclusion: The results showed that family intervention based on FOCUS program improved quality of life in patients with breast cancer.
