چکیده مقاله:

Since decades, eddy current testing with encircling coils is the worldwide standard when producing tubes, bars and wires. Encircling coils completely surround the test material and allow 100% testing even at extremely high production speeds. The testing is contact-free without the need of a couplant and offers low operation costs.Due to the strong dependence between the flaw detection sensitivity and the distance of the material to the coil, it is highly recommend that the guidance centers the material in the middle of the coil to achieve a testing with equal sensitivity. In practice, position changes from the centre of up to several mm occur, which easily lead to repeatability deviations of up to more than 10dB when detecting a flaw.By using segmented sensor arrays, the new FOERSTER segmented encircling coil system allows testing with clearly improved repeatability even at dynamic changes of material positions inside the encircling coil. The flaw sensor arrays are arranged over the whole circumference of the coil opening. Additionally to the flaw signals, the information where a defect has passed the coil circumferentially is generated by these. For instance, this new information can be used to identify systematic production discrepancies. In addition to the segmented flaw sensors, there are segmented clearance sensors arranged over the circumference of the coil opening. The generated clearance signals will be used to compensate the clearance depending on the deviation of the actual flaw detection. On the basis of this improved repeatability of flaw detection, a more accurate testing and higher productivity due to less false rejects is possible.
