چکیده مقاله:
Background: Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) as an autoimmune disease of the skin and mucous membranes, is associated with complicating disorders. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cardioprotective effects of L-carnitine (LC) supplementation in PV patients.Materials and Methods: In this clinical study, 48 patients were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either 2g LC (n=26) or placebo (n=26) for 8 weeks. Serum levels of LC, Bone Morphogenic Protein 4 (BMP4) and Cystatin C were measured before and after the intervention. Results: only 45 participants [LC group (n=21) and placebo group (n=24)] completed the trial. LC intake considerably decreased serum levels of BMP4 (P=0.003) and Cystatin C (P=0.001). In addition, there was a significant increase in serum carnitine (P<0.001) in comparison with the placebo. No harmful effects were observed during the study. Conclusion: LC supplementation has favourable effects on cardiometabolic biomarkers in PV patients. However, further investigations are required to confirm these results.
