In patients, depression is common and associated with poor quality of life, more frequent hospitalizations, and higher mortality. This study examined the effect of spiritual counseling on the Depression in patients with gastric cancer. Methods: a randomized clinical trial was conducted on 44 gastric cancer patients who were randomized to either an 5-week spiritual counseling intervention (n = 22) or a control group that received routine education/care (n = 22). Research instruments consisted of demographic data questionnaire, spiritual health questionnaire, DASS questionnaire which were filled before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21. Results: The findings of current study showed that, DAS scores reduced after counseling in the experimental group (p˂0.05), while no reduction was observed in the control group in this regard (p˃0.05). Moreover, in experimental group, spiritual health after counseling significantly increased compared to pre- counseling stage (p˂0.001). Conclusion: Our findings showed that spiritual counseling caused depression reduction in patients with gastric cancer. Therefore, in cases of refractory diseases such as gastric cancer that affect the body, mind and spirit of patients, nurses could apply a holistic care approach with emphasis on spiritual approach to improve mental health and quality of life.
