As a solution to reduce pollutant emissions, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are going to take over the conventional vehicles. However, changing the structure of conventional vehicles to PHEVs, will affect their dynamic performance. This paper proposes the use of semi-active suspension system for PHEV lateral dynamic improvement for the first time. For this purpose, a conventional vehicle model has firstly been simulated in the ADAMS software. Using a standard lane change test, the model vehicle has then been validated. In the next step, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is modeled by adding a battery pack, electric motor, and other equipments to the conventional power transmission system. Finally, by changing the suspension system to the semi-active mode and applying the Grand Hock control strategy, the handling and stability of the hybrid plug-in vehicle has been studied. The results indicate that hybridization of the vehicle has a negative effect on the handling and stability of the vehicle. Also, by using a semi-active suspension system, the stability and handling of the vehicle can be improved, showing the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
