Over the past decade, the dental field has benefited from recent findings in stem cell biology and tissue engineering that led to the elaboration of novel ideas and concepts for the regeneration of dental tissues or entire new teeth. Stem cells can self-renew and produce different cell types, thus providing new strategies to regenerate missing tissues and treat diseases. It was instituted that stem cells grow rapidly and have the potential to form specialized dentin, bone, and neuronal cells. The most valuable ongoing research in regenerative dentistry is the study on oral-derived stem cells. Dental stem cells can be obtained with ease, making them an attractive source of autologous stem cells for use in restoring vital pulp tissue removed because of infection, in regeneration of periodontal ligament lost in periodontal disease, and for generation of complete or partial tooth structures to form biological implants. Dental and periodontal stem cells for tooth and periodontal regeneration include dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs), periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs), stem cells from the dental apical papilla (SCAPs), and stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs), dental follicle stem cells (DFSCs) and dental epithelial stem cells (DESCs). In this study, we briefly present the various dental stem cell-based treatment approaches and strategies that could be translated into dental practice and revolutionize dentistry
