چکیده مقاله:

IntroductionSmoking is one of the most important risk factors that lead to many diseases. Although the mechanical causes of diseases due to smoking are still unclear. The aim of the study was to investigate effect of smoking on serum glutathione peroxidase, glutathione, and malondialdehyde levels among Kut Technical Institute students.MethodsAnalytical study design is conducted on (30) smoking students (case) and (30) non-smoking students (control). The activities of glutathione peroxidise, glutathione, and malondialdehyde levels in sera of students were measured spectrophotometricallly.ResultsThe serum glutathione peroxidise, serum glutathione, and serum malondialdehyde levels were (231 ± 27, 21 ± 4.6 and 7.6 ± 3.4 peroxidase U/L) respectively in non-smoker students. On the othe hand; there were decrement in the level of serum glutathione peroxidise (188 ± 34 U/L) and serum glutathione (15 ± 3.3 μmole/l) in smokers. Serum malondialdehyde levels were elevated in smokers compared to control groups.ConclusionsThe study concluded that smoking had a negative effect on antioxidants in the serum accompanied by a decrease in activity of glutathione peroxidase and an increase malondialdehyde. These parameters indicate the occurrence of oxidative stress that accompanies with smoking
