Effects of taking Garlic on Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) of Larynx :A Systematic Review

Background: Garlic is a herb that has been reported with many healing effects. One of the most important therapeutic functions of garlic, its effect on cancer cells, especially squamous cells. Laryngeal cancer accounts for 2% of all cancers, and 95% of laryngeal carcinomas are SCCs. This systematic review study aims to investigate the association between garlic consumption and treatment and prevention of SCC cancer in the larynx.Methods and materials:In this study, all articles about the title were reviewed from 1995 to 2018. Key words based on MeSH, such as Garlic, Neoplasm, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Prevention, Therapeutics, and Larynx were searched in PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, SID, Magiran and Iranmedex. The criteria for entering the study were all clinical trials, experiments, and invitro that were conducted on the treatment or prevention of larynx SCC with using garlic individually (Not accompanied by vegetables or other materials) and their full article was available. Exit criteria were descriptive studies, extensive reviews that the details and method of using garlic were unknown.Results:A total of 565 articles were found which, according to entry and exit criteria, finally 6 papers from different countries were analyzed. A significant reduction in the number of Hep-2 cancer cells was reported after the addition of aqueous extract (p <0.001). In another clinical study, the odds of SCC cancer were estimated to be 56% after consumption of garlic. An study showed that taking garlic 7 times or more per week reduced the chance of laryngeal cancer (OR = 0.17). In a study in China, 527 cancer patients were compared with 1297 controls, and it was stated that the chance of SCC larynx decreases with daily intake of garlic (OR = 0.7).Conclusion: The results of various papers showed that the use of garlic alone can play a significant role in the treatment and prevention of SCC cancer in the larynx. It is suggested that more interventional studies be conducted on the anti-cancer effects of garlic on other organs of the body.
