Modeling of Pilot Exciter in Brushless Synchronous Generators Using Average Modeling Approach

The performance of a permanent magnet synchronous generator, when combined with a rectifier-fed dc load is investigated in this paper. These systems are often used as the pilot exciters of brushless synchronous generators to provide an efficient and reliable source of electrical power. An exact voltagebehind- reactance model of the permanent magnet generator has been combined with the average model of the rectifier. To improve the dynamic of the system, the rectifier load current is modeled using its first-order Taylor series expansion throughout the complete averaging period. The model is validated through comparison of the proposed average model and the experimental results.
