Self-Assessment of the Clinical Competence of Nurses in Abadan City in 2016

Background: Clinical competence has been one of the most important competencies of nursing profession and is an effective factor in ensuring the quality of care provided and satisfaction of patients. Therefore, the present study was conducted to self-assessment of the clinical competency of nurses in Abadan city in 2016.Methods: this article is a cross sectional descriptive. Using census method, clinical competency of 83 nurses in nine different wards of the selected hospital in Abadan city were evaluated by self-assessment method. The criteria for entering was at least 6-month person s work experience and satisfaction to participate in the study. The data collection tool was a clinical nursing competence questionnaire that examined 73 skills in 7 different areas. For every skill, the first, the nurse scored a score between 0-100 and then the degree of skill utilization is determined by a four point Likert scale. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS software and inferential and distribution statistics.Results: Average total score of nurses clinical competence was 82/98 11/72 percent. The highest rate was reported 95/31 4/18 percent by the nurses working in the pediatric ward. Also, the results of this study showed that nurses frequently uses 61/1 percent of practical skills related to management positions area in the ward, which is higher than other areas.Conclusion: The results showed that in general, the level of clinical competence and the level of use of nursing skills in the study population is desirable. Using the results of such research, it is possible to identify the skills that need further education, and to overally develop clinical nursing competence and patient satisfaction by conducting retraining courses, in addition to upgrading these skills.
