Impact of couples’ life skills on successful marriage: A qualitative study

Background: Successful marriage and the strengthening family foundation bring about numerous positive outcomes for both the family and society. Thus, the present study aims at demonstrating and clarifying the role of life skills in successful marriage according to Iranian couples. Methods: This qualitative study was done conducted to examine the dimensions of successful marriage by the conventional content analysis method through the participation of 10 Iranian couples. The research environment was the health centers of the Shahid Beheshti, Tehran, and Iran universities of Medical Sciences. Having acquired at least %70 of the score from ENRICH questionnaire, the couples entered our study. Sampling was done purposefully, and the data was collected using unstructured in-depth interview, and they continued until saturation was achieved. In the meantime, data analysis was conducted using conventional content analysis method. Results: The main concepts achieved from the data included four main themes that one of them was life skills. This theme included three main categories: love skills, communicational skills, and problem solving skills. Also love skills and communicational skills included Emotional intimacy, sexual satisfactionssubcategories and principles of skills and effective communicational skills sub categories respectively. In the main category of problem solving skill, there are two main subcategories: Problem solving capabilities and setting and preserving boundaries both between themselves and with their families.Conclusion: The results of this research showed that for a successful marriage, knowing necessary life skills are essential. Therefore For achieving success in married life, one cannot ignore the role of training in acquiring life skills both before the married life and after it.
