Psychosocial adjustment to cardiovascular diseases and its relationship with spiritual well-being in Iranian patients

Background and Aim: Studies about spiritual health and its relationship with psychosocialadjustment to illness in patients with cardiovascular diseases is limited. This study aimed toexamine psychosocial adjustment to illness in patients with cardiovascular diseases and itsrelationship with spiritual well-being.Design and Methods: This is a descriptive analytic study conducted 2017 in Qazvin. Ethicalapproval was obtained from the Ethics committee of Qazvin University of Medical Sciences.Subjects were 150 patients who were admitted to the cardiac ward of Boali Sina hospital. Datawere collected using a demographic checklist developed by the researcher and two standardquestionnaires of Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale (PAIS) and Ellisossn-PalutzianSpiritual Well-Being Scale. Data were analyzed using the statistical package of SPSS 21.Results: The mean of age patients was 55.4 ± 13.68 years. From 150 patients, 50% were men,75% married, and 62% had lower diploma educational level. The mean of overall psychosocialadjustment to illness was 62.78 ± 6.861 (Range= 48 – 83). The mean of psychosocial adjustmentto illness was 63.91 ± 7.71 in men and 61.4 ± 5.713 in women (p= .03). In this study, the meanof overall spiritual was 74.93. The mean of overall spiritual health was 68.10 ± 10.16 in men and81.99 ± 5.10 in women (p= .001). The results of this study showed a significant inverserelationship between psychosocial adjustment to illness and spiritual health (rr= -.21, p= .01).Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that patients with cardiovascular diseases have amoderate level of psychosocial adjustment, which have a significant relationship with theirspiritual well-being. Further study in this regards recommended.
