Study of suicide deaths between 1392 and 1396 in Iran

Background & Objectives: Suicide is one of the public health problems, especially among adolescents which is increasing in recent years. The increasing trend of Suicide in recent years has made suicide the second cause of death in the age group of 19-15 years. Iran is a low incidence suicide, but its significant increase over the past ten years has made suicide one of the health concerns in Iran. Methods: This population-based study was conducted in Iran over a 5-year period (1392 to 1396) on incidence of suicide in Iran. The study design was of longitudinal type. The study data was obtained from the Legal Medicine Office, which was responsible for recording and confirming suicide in Iran. Results: In the 5 years studied, 19279 deaths from suicide have been Registered in the country s forensic medicine. The incidence of suicide in the first year of study was 4.8 and in the last year was 5.5 per 100,000, indicating an upward trend in suicide in Iran (Figure 1). The highest rate of suicide was observed in men in Ilam with an incidence of 16.3 per 100,000 people. suicide rates in males were higher than women (p <0.001). In the northwest and west of the country, the incidence of suicide has decreased in men and has increased in women. Hanging (52.3 %) is the most important method of suicide in men and women.
