Cancer as Bad News: Comparing the Viewpoint of Nurses and Patients

Introduction: How delivering cancer as bad news is important. There is thus need to identifystatus of breaking bad news. The aim of this study was to compare the viewpoint of nurses andpatients in presenting bad news to cancer patients.Materials Methods: In this descriptive study, participants were selected by convenience methodfrom patients with cancer and nurses working at Seyedalshohada hospital and Entekhab center inIsfahan during 2015. Data was gathered through two-part questionnaire; the first part includeddemographic characteristics and the second part included 29 phrases for attitude assessment in 5fields of adjusting the unpleasant scene, disclosure of the disease, relieving the concerns, givinginformation and general considerations. The data was analyzed via SPSS v. 18 using descriptivestatistics, test and ANOVA test and <0.05 was considered significant.Results: The present study showed that the mean age of 100 participated patients and 50participated nurses was 49.96 12.87 and 30.77 7.52 years respectively. Among patients 44.9%and 17.3% of the patients had breast and gastrointestinal cancer, respectively. In all the fields themean score of patients was lower than the score of nurses and this difference in adjusting theunpleasant scene, relieving the concerns, disclosure of the disease, giving information and generalconsiderations was respectively 0.006, 0.0001, 0.003, 0.018 and 0.0001.Conclusion: Based on results of this study, there have been present gap between the healthproviders that gives the bad news and the patient who receives the bad news. It seems necessary tocreate standard framework for the country according to our culture for improving the currentsituation. Also, it is necessary continuous educational course in curriculum and hospital for healthcare providers.
