The effect of Group Discussion on anxiety and lifestyle in women with gestational diabetes

Introduction: women are likely to be involved in anxiety two times more than men. One of the reasons for this increase is that stressors like pregnancy are specific for women. Diabetes is the most common medical problems and one of considerable anxiety for pregnant women. People react in different ways Stressful factors, some cite the compromise, but in others it can lead to psychological disorders. The best way to manage this condition is corrected lifestyle. Therefore, this study was done with the aim of evaluation the effect of group discussion on level of anxiety and lifestyle of women with gestational diabetes.Methods: the present study was done as a clinical trial on 60 primigravidas 20-25 weeks referred to diabetes clinic in the Kermanshah city were selected by convenience sampling method. Data were collected on using personal data forms and Spiel Berger anxiety Inventory questionnaire and Health-promoting lifestyle questionnaire in the three stages of consultation before, immediately after and one month after the intervention. In addition to routine pregnancy care Sixth 90 min sessions of group discussion courses were held during 6 week (once a week). The control group only received routine pregnancy care anxiety score before the intervention and the end of intervention were analyzed in all two groups. Data analysis was done using T-test, Tabs analysis.Results: in this study, the mean anxiety scores were not significantly different in the two groups before the intervention but there were significant differences in discussion group after the intervention (p<0/001). There was a decrease in the mean anxiety score in discussion group after the intervention. Before the intervention, There was no significant difference between two groups in lifestyle scores (P=0.098) but group discussion improved lifestyle (P<0.001).Conclusion: whereas there was a slightly increase in the control group. The results of this study indicated that group discussion could reduce anxiety and given the low cost and impact of this type counseling advice on improving the lifestyle of women with gestational diabetes in their care, can be used in diabetes centers and clinics.
