A Review of Strategies for Promoting Children s Sexual Health in Family and at School

چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: For achieving children s sexual health, family and school are two important institutions; however, parents do not have the necessary knowledge and skills, and teachers are not well-trained. Therefore, this study was conducted to review strategies for promoting children s sexual health.Methods: For conducting this narrative literature review electronic databases, including Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, and PubMed, including Medline, as well as Persian databases like Scientific Information Database and Iran Medex were searched to retrieve articles published from 2001 to 2018 by using the keywords Sexuality Education, Sexual Health, Children, Sex Education, Teacher and Parents, a total of 96 studies that was related to the topic were extracted. After title and abstract screening, 51 articles and then in full text screening, 22 articles were excluded. Finally, 23 articles were used for writing this review.Results: Strategies that promoting children s sexual health were classified in 2 categories and 14 sub-categories: 1- Family-based strategies: empowerment of parents, promoting parents awareness and attitudes, developing parent-specific educational programs, providing valid educational resources, provide training opportunities for parents and answering their questions, create self-esteem and confidence in parents for sexual education. 2- School-based strategies: promotion teachers knowledge, skills and attitudes, pre-service and in-service training for teachers, preparing teachers for teaching specific children s sexual health topics and answering their unexpected questions, providing educational resources, preparing teachers for constant contact with parents, providing school-based education programs for children, promoting culture and developing a specific executive instruction for sexual education at school.Conclusion: Parents as well as teachers have a significant role in promoting children s sexual health. Therefore, improving their knowledge and attitudes, providing continuing education, developing valid educational programs and resources for parents and teachers is essential.
