An Overview on Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB and DAB+)

Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB and DAB+) are new perspectives of radio broadcasting. DAB / DAB+ systems are multimedia radio allowing transmission of audio, text, graphics, photographs, maps, charts, and video. The innovative concepts used in the DAB digital radio enabled digital broadcasting by eliminating the effects of interference, especially during mobile reception. This paper briefly reviews the main structure, building blocks, functionalities and main advantages of DAB and DAB+ standards. Finally, by consideration of capabilities of the digital systems, especially in the cases of consuming power and spectrum, it is concluded that digital radio system has many advantages to be a suitable alternative for its analog counterpart i.e. FM radio broadcasting
