Gene Therapy: Promises and Problems

Gene therapy has developed intensely since the first clinical gene transferexperiment in October 1989. This therapy has the potential to cureincurable diseases and significantly change the face of medicine in thefuture. The dream of treating incurable diseases moves closer to realitywith the success of CAR T cell therapies, novel gene delivery systems, andthe discoveries of miRNAs, and CRISPR/Cas9. There are a few approvedgene therapy medicinal products (GTMPs), but several new GTMPs arecurrently under review. However, despite recent technological advances,substantial challenges persist, many of which encompass the underlyingtechnologies. This paper will review the landmarks that had a significantimpact on the progress of gene therapy. It will also address some concernsthat have been related to gene therapy as an emerging therapy.
