Why does Low Resilience occur in People with Spinal Cord Injury

Aim: Rehabilitation of spinal cord injury is a continuous process needing resilience in all aspects of life. Occupational therapists focus on facilitating adaptation in all aspects of daily occupations. This study aimed to explore factors leading to low resilience in Iranian people with spinal cord injury.Methods: Thirteen participants having low resilience with spinal cord injury participated in this qualitative study through purposive sampling .To gather the data, in depth, semi-structured interviews were used. All were recorded, transcribed verbatim and comparatively analyzed via Content analysis methodology.Findings: After constant comparative analyses, the main factor leading to low resilience in this population was emerged as social reject with three categories including; social ignorance, inappropriate sympathy and lack of essential knowledge of SCI.Conclusion: According to the results, social reject is the leading cause of low resilience in Iranians with SCI. Exploring the avoiding factors of resilience, contributes to public knowledge development about the issues related to SCI. Negative outcomes of SCI such as social reject could be prevented through a comprehensive community-based rehabilitation (CBR) program conducted by a team of professionals in rehabilitation sciences, sociology and ergonomics.
