On the effects of strain rate on Li diffusion and stresses in spherical Li- ion battery electrodes

It is known that lithium-ion battery electrodes deform during electrochemical charging and discharging. In this work, effects of strain rate on lithium (Li) diffusion andstresses in a spherical electrode particle, using diffusion equation and the theory of linear elasticity, are investigated. In order to contribute the effects of strain rate,it is considered that total Li flux consists of two portions: diffusion and convection fluxes due to gradient of Li concentration and strain rate, respectively. Two boundaryconditions are used in the stress analysis: constant potential and constant current. Numerical results suggest that the effects of strain rate on distribution of Li concentration and stresses are relatively small initially and then increase by increasing the lithiation time. The results show that strain rate decreases Li diffusion and leads to a smaller state of charge. Moreover, the strain rate may cause an increase in the magnitudes of stresses: lherefore, the predicted probability of fracture of active electrode particles isincreased. The results could be basis for selecting electrode material and proper strategy for charging and discharging with minimum stresses in Li-ion battery electrodeparticles.
