PREVALENCE OF OBESITY AND OVERWEIGHT IN MIDDLE-AGED EMPLOYEES IN OIL INDUSTRY OF BUSHEHR PROVINCE IN 2017

Background and Aim: Obesity is one of the most important health problem in the world. Industrial life and increased consumption of high fat and calorie food has led an increase in obesity.The aim of the present study was to determine prevalnce of overweight and obesity in oil industry emploees of Bushehr province.Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on13851 men and women aged 20-60 years working in oil industry of Bushehr province. The data of this research were extracted from the medical records. Body mass index (BMI: kg/m2) was calculated from measured weight and height. Overweight and obesity were defined as follows: Overweight (BMI 25.0–29.9) and obesity (BMI≥30.0).Results: in 2017, 46.6% of men and women working in oil industry were overweight and 13.6% of them were obese. In addition, we measured the prevalence of overweight and obesity among people over the age of 18 years of personnel families who referred to oil industry clinics, the prevalence of overweight and obesity in personnel families was 39.6% and 14.1% respectively.Conclusion: Overweight and obesity have affected more than half of the population in Middle-aged men and women employed in oil industry of Bushehr province. Preventive and therapeutic strategies to control obesity and consequently to reduce the burden of related diseases seem to be necessary.
