MACRONUTRIENTS INTAKE AND RISK OF BREAST CANCER AMONG IRANIAN WOMEN

Background and Aim: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer among women worldwide. The influence of dietary intake upon breast cancer remains largely understudied and the exsiting results are inconsistents. Data about this relation is not sufficient in the Middle-Eastern countries. We condcuted a a case-control study in the Cancer Institute of Iran to assess the association between food intake and breast cancer in Iranian women.Methods: Breast cancer cases (n=452) were patients who has no history of cancer and controls (n=494) were selected from healthy visitors in the Imam Khomeini general hospitlal and were frequency matched for age and residential place. Dietary intake was investigated by a 168 item food frequency questionnaire. We used Student᾽s unpaired t-test to compare the group means of food intake and logistic regression was used to investigate the association between dietary intake and breast cancer risk. Results: We found no association between the risk of breast cancer and different macronutrients, including carbohydrate (OR=1.00, 95%CI, 0.99-1.00), protein (OR=0.99, 95%CI, 0.99-1.00), fat (OR=1.00, 95%CI, 0.99-1.00), and fiber intake (OR=0.99, 95%CI, 0.98-1.00). In addidtion, the associations were not signficinats for premeonopuase and posmonopuas breast cancer patients. Conclusion: : We founds that a high intake of fiber might decrease the risk of breast cancer in Iranian women. Further studies are suggested about the association between the intake of different fatty acids and the risk of breast cancer among Iranian women.
