چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Few studies have been conducted to investigate the effect of alpha-lipoic acid supplementation on the outcomes experienced by ill-patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of this supplementMethods: The present study was a randomized, double-blinded, placebo controlled clinical trial in which 80 patients (18–80 years) were randomized to two groups to receive either alpha-lipoic acid (600 mg/day) or placebo for8 weeks. Kolmogorov_smirnov statistical test was used to evaluate the normal distribution of data. Chi-square test was used to compare qualitative variables between the two groups at the beginning and the end of the study. Quantitative data were presented as mean ± standard deviation and P <0.05 was considered as a significant level. Results: In this study, no significant changes were observed on blood pressure, total antioxidant capacity, hospitalization, ventilation time, malnutrition, anthropometric assessments, Improvement in malnutrition, three-day record of food intake before and after the intervention and lipid profiles but we found significant increase (p = .001) in HDL-cholConclusion: : Based on the findings, supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid did not significantly improve the health of patients. Findings on lipid profiles, malnutrition, blood pressure and anthropometric evaluations, as in other studies, are counterproductive. Given the adverse conditions of patients and the high mortality rate, more studies are needed to evaluate the effect of this supplement.
