PREVALENCE OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY AMONG YOUTH IN EAST AZARBAIJAN PROVINCE

Background and Aim: Obesity and overweight are among the most important health threats in the current century. Obesity is a major health problem because it can cause chronic illness. The present study was conducted to evaluate overweight and obesity in the age group of 19-29 year old youth.Methods: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of obesity and overweight among young people in East Azarbaijan province. In this cross-sectional study, height, weight and body mass index were measured and recorded in the sib system. The criteria for overweight, body mass index of 25- 29.9 and for obesity, the body mass index was considered to be more than 30.Results: In this study, 174977 young people from the East Azarbaijan province were anthropologically, of whom 48284 were overweight, 25489 were obese and 73773 were overweight and obese. The results of this study indicate that the prevalence of overweight among the 19-29 year olds is 27.59%, the prevalence of obesity is 14.57% and the prevalence of overweight and obesity is 42.16%. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among women is 48.06% and among males is 31.24%.Conclusion: This study shows the risk of increasing the prevalence of overweight and obesity among youth in the province. Therefore, educational programs are recommended to promote health habits and healthy lifestyle
