PREVALENCE OF OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY IN FALAVARJAN CITY, 2017

Background and Aim: Nowadays obesity and overweight are one of the main health problems in the world. The prevalence of them is increasing in both advanced and developing countries. Since, no study has evaluated the incidence of overweight and obesity in Falavarjan city, the purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of obesity and overweight in this city.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 86433 subjects that referred to health care centers. Of these, 33007 were men (38%) and 53,426 women (61%). The participants were divided into four groups included adolescent (5-18 years), young (18-29 years), middle-aged (30-59 years) and elder (over than 60years). Overweight and obesity was diagnosed on the basis of BMI (≥25 kg/mg2). Results: There is the significant difference in the prevalence of obesity and overweight between women and men. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescents was 16.6% in men and 15.2% in women, for young group were 21.3% in men and 38.9% in women, for middle-aged were 41.6% in men and 65.7% in women and for elder participants were 39.2 in men and 57.3 in women. Conclusion: Our finding demonstrated that the prevalence of overweight and obesity was significantly higher in women in all age groups. It is necessary to make interventions to change lifestyle and dietary habits in order to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity in all age groups.
