چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Endoscopic examination of the gastrointestinal tract (GI) with macroscopic and histopathological evaluation provides a tool to differentiate the major causes offunctional dyspepsia. Although the distinction is not always defined. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency and type of the macroscopic and histopathological changes inthe GI endoscopy in patients with symptoms of functional dyspepsia. Material and methods: A cross sectional study was performed on 97 patients withfunctional dyspepsia symptoms, at the age of 10-85 years, who had no history of weight loss, major comorbidity like Diabetes or cirrhosis, NSAIDs consumption, peptic ulcer orany other confounding causes underwent gastroscopy. Biopsy specimens were taken from the gastric and duodenum for histopathological examination. The presence of H. pyloriinfection has been established on the basis of histopathological examination and positive rapid urease test. Results: Gastric biopsies from 97 patients with FD were studied. Histological examination of gastric mucosal biopsies showed that Chronic inflammation was present in 94 (96.9%),activity was seen in 47 (48.5%), glandular atrophy was seen in 3 (3.1%) and intestinal metaplasia was seen in 9 (9.2%) patients with FD on gastric biopsy. H pylori wereidentified on gastric mucosal biopsies in 46 (47.4%) patients with based on H & E and Geimsa stained sections. Conclusion: Patients with this condition have a high frequency of gastric mucosal inflammation and H pylori infection.
