The prevalence of pelA and pslA virulence genes related to biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance patterns among clinical isolates of P. Aeruginosa

Background: Biofilms have an important function in severity and treatment of infections caused by P. aeruginosa. This study was evaluated by the presence of pelA and pslA genes, antibiotic resistance patterns and the association of biofilm formation with resistance to antimicrobial agents. Methods: Eighty P. aeruginosa isolates were isolated and identified by the phenotypic approach. The antibiotic susceptibility pattern was determined by the disk diffusion agar method. The micro-platewas used for quality detection of biofilm formation ability. DNA of P. aeruginosa was extracted and pslA and pelA genes were detected by the PCR. Results: Thirty-eight of 80 isolates were biofilm forming by micro-plate assay. In the present study, 23.8% and 30% all of the isolates had the pelA and pslA genes, respectively. High frequency of resistance was observed in fluoroquinolone, cephalosporin and carbapenem and multidrug-resistant was detected in 85% of the isolates. Conclusion: The rates of antibiotic resistance among clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa were high and bacteria growing in biofilms are more resistant to antimicrobial agents. We were considered pelA and pslA genes as a biofilm-formation marker of P. aeruginosa isolates. There were relationships between virulence genes, biofilm–forming, and antibiotic resistance.
