Effect of mint extract on bacteria and biofilm of enterococcus faecalis isolated from patients with periodontitis

Background: Oral pharmaceutical productsare health products that have been widely used by people for many years. Mouthwashes and herbal compounds are the most important products that are used with therapeutic purposes and beauty in the mouth. Enterococcus faecalis is very important for the formation of biofilms in dental problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate antibiotic resistance and determine the MIC, MBC and BIC of mint extract and determine the frequency of gelE gene in clinical specimens. Methods: This study was performed on 190 clinical specimens of enterococcus faecalis collected from periodontal patients. After isolation and confirmation of Enterococcus faecalis bacterium, MIC and MBC of mint extract was obtained by agar dilution method. Finally, the frequency and presence of gene involved in the formation of Enterococcus faecalis bacteria biofilm such as gelE was investigated by molecular method. Results: Most of the isolates were male and the age group was 26-35 years old. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MBC) for Enterococcus fecalis were 50 mg/ml and 100 mg/ml for mint extract. BIC was obtained for peppermint extract at a concentration of 50 mg/ml. The frequency of gelE gene was 89.5%. There was a significant relationship between biofilm formation and presence of gelE gene (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: Peppermint extract can be used to control bacteria and biofilm of enterococcus faecalis.
