Materials & Methods: 65 patients in the age group> 60 years old (the intervention group) in addition to the usual care of the control group, received in a two-month training program including strength, balance and walking, and trauma prevention training to the area of operation. The exercise program was followed the day after leaving the ICU by walking for 15 minutes, gradually giving up to 30 minutes a day before the discharge, and daily walking instruction at home, hand and feet weight training three weeks after discharge for 3 days in a week at home. Exercise and wound healing at home were controlled during a telephone call and weekly at the hospital. Results: 79 patients with cardiac surgery were entered into the study that, 14 patients did not gave consent to continue the program (p<0.05). The mean of injury severity score (ISS) in the intervention group was significantly different from the control group (11.6 and 12.4, p<0.0001).Conclusion: Using exercise program for the elderly after cardiac surgery is effective on preventing trauma and wound healing.
