چکیده مقاله:

Background and Objective: Each year, more than a hundred million people at worldwide are operated and they experienced postoperative pain at different intensities. For the importance of side effects caused from pain and analgesic requests in patients after surgery, the current study was done for the assessment of effects of Lavandula stoechas on pain, analgesia request and satisfaction of patients after abdominal surgery. Materials and Methods: The present study is a single-blind randomized clinical trial. The research community was all of the patients under abdominal surgery. Sampling was purposive according to inclusion criteria (were being 18-65 years old, having undergone abdominal surgery with a duration of operation of fewer than 90 minutes)and Exclusion criteria(were being a drug addict, suffering from chronic diseases or diabetes, having undergone another operation simultaneously, suffering from cancer, having a history of eczema or allergy to herbs, having a history of migraine or chronic headaches, suffering from a hemorrhagic disease, suffering from active mental illness, or being afflicted with disorders of the olfactory system). Sample size was considered 40 (N = 120) in intervention, placebo and control groups. After surgery, samples in intervention group inhaled Lavender essential oil and samples in placebo group inhaled Almond oil. The intervention was done 3 times and pain scores were checked Half an hour after each intervention with Visual Analogue Scale. Finally, subjects were assessed for getting analgesia and satisfaction from pain control during the first 24 hours after surgery. Statistical analysis was performed using software Spss version 16. For analysis, it used ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Findings: Results showed the statistically significant difference in pain scores between three groups (P=0.000). Considering the time factor, Subjects in the intervention group reported more decrease in pain scores that it was significantly different among groups (P<0.0001). Also, results showed getting analgesics was significantly lower in the intervention group (P=0.000). Finding didn’t show a significant difference in patient’s satisfaction from pain control among three groups (P=0.25). Conclusion: Overall, it can have concluded that aromatherapy with Lavandula can decrease pain and analgesic request after abdominal surgery. But perhaps satisfaction from pain control is influenced by several factors, that recommended more research.
