چکیده مقاله:

Background and Objective: According to the results of other studies, dentists, more than other professionals, prone to physical discomfort caused by their job. The statistics show that musculoskeletal problems in dental practice are one of the major causes of absenteeism from work due to illness, efficiency reduction, and even lead to job quitting. Up to now, there are no studies on dentists’ ergonomic conditions in the city of Bandar Abbas and there are no specific statistics of the prevalence of musculoskeletal discomfort in this profession. The present study aimed to achieve the prevalence level of musculoskeletal disorders among dentists in Bandar Abbas.. Materials and Methods: This study is a cross‑sectional study conducted in 2014–2015. The population of the present study is dentists of Bandar Abbas. A Czech list is presented to all participants of the evaluation. Czech list has a number of questions that include demographic data such as gender, age, height, and weight, along with questions about working hours and the use of painkillers, left or right handed, standing or sitting work, pain in various parts of the body, If there is pain, the amount is determined according to the severity that is divided into three groups of mild, moderate, and severe. Data analysis is carried out using SPSS software and Chi‑square tests were applied for qualitative data connection, and independent t‑test was used to compare quantitative data and to determine the relationship between pain severity and other variables the Pearson test is applied .Findings: Among the total of 104 questionnaires completed by dentists, 76 questionnaires were accepted. Of these, 51 (67.1%) were males and 25 (32.9%) were females. The most common disorders among dentists had been reported, respectively, as back pain (55.26%), headache (51.31%), neck (50%), wrist (47.36%), shoulder (42.10%), scapula (34.21%), knees (25%), fingers (23.68%), seats (17.10%), foot and ankle (13.15%), and elbow (10.52%). It was also found that there is a significant relationship between musculoskeletal pain and daily working hours, rest between visits of patients, exercise, and use of painkillers. However, there was no significant relationship with other variables. Conclusion: In this study, 78.9% of considered dentists had one of the musculoskeletal disorders and continued their activity regardless of the damage. Among the musculoskeletal disorders at work and back pain, disorders related to neck pain, headaches, wrist, and hand were the most frequent. Considering that these disturbances in dentistry are one of the important reasons of absenteeism from work, it seems that a change in attitude and habits, informing people about poor working conditions, proper ergonomics training, working with appropriate equipment, and planning periodically examinations in the future can have beneficial effects.
