چکیده مقاله:

Brain is the most complex matter known to human. It has emerged over 500,000,000 years ago and has now evolved into its most complex form: the human brain. Higher levels of cognitive abilities such as perception, memory, problem solving, language and social cognition have gradually emerged as more complex brains have evolved. In this talk, I will first show evidence indicating that diversity and level of cognitive abilities are related to the number of neurons in the cerebral cortex. Physical limitations in long distance connectivity have resulted in the creation of relatively independent neural modules in large brains. Empirical evidence suggest that multiple and parallel conscious experiences emerge from these neural modules. In normal brains, these distributed and relatively independent conscious modules work covertly (as slave awarenesses) and are integrated to create an overt and unified sense of self (master awareness). Neuroscientific evidence show that the subordinate conscious awarenesses are revealed when the integrative processes and the master awareness access is impaired. In the second part of my talk, I will use evidence from individuals with genetic mutations and neurological diseases to argue that our perceptual world is deeply affected by our brain structure. Our cognitive world is shaped by our brain structure and is constrained by its organization.
