Relationship between spirituality and social skills among nursing students

Introduction: The importance of spirituality and spiritual growth in humans over the past few decades has attracted the attention of psychologists and mental health professionals. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between spirituality and social skills among nursing students of Abadan University of Medical Sciences. Method: The present research is a descriptive-analytic study that was done in cross-sectional form in the second half of the academic year 2016 in Abadan University of Medical Sciences. 189 nursing students in the census manner were selected and studied. Data collection tools consisted of two standard questionnaires: spirituality questionnaire (SQ) and social skills questionnaire for adolescents. The difference between mean scores of spiritual activity and positive and negative behaviors was determined by t-test and the relationship between the scores of the questionnaire (spirituality and social skills) using Pearson correlation coefficient. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21 software. Findings: 38.4% of the participants were female and 61.6% were male. Mean scores spirituality subscales among nursing students was as follows: self-awareness 31.79±4.40, spiritual belief 12.83±2.23, spiritual activity 18.35±3.01, spiritual need 29.70±4.13, and mean score of social skills was 130.62±17.60. Results showed that there was a significant relationship between spirituality and social skills (P= 0.02). Conclusion: Increasing spirituality in young people increases the level of their social skills; therefore, planning to strengthen the spiritual foundations is a major issue that needs to be addressed.
