چکیده مقاله:
Background: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is considered to be the most common malignancy in humans and occurs primarily on the skin especially in the head and neck and accounts for approximately 75-80% of all malignant disease of skin. The incidence of it is exponentially increasing worldwide, but epidemiologic studies to ascertain exact numbers are sparse. Because of more difficult to recurred comparing with primary tumors, and high overall 5-year re-recurrence rate it is important to show biologic markers could be predict recurrence potential.OCT4 is a known stem cell marker that its expression appears to be important for cancer cell survival .Objective: To explore the relation between expression of OCT4 in head and neck basal cell carcinoma and recurrence of tumor. Methods: Using immunohistochemistry, the expression of OCT4 in 84 head and neck basal cell carcinoma paraffin blocks, we explored its association with regional recurrence. Results: 76 specimens were weakly positive staining (%90), 6 specimens were moderately positive staining (%7) and 2 specimens were strongly positive (%3).Positive expression of OCT4 was significantly associated with recurrence (P<0.001)Conclusion: The expression of OCT4 enables probably the tumor to have a higher degree of stemness, which in turn results in a tumor recurrence for patients with basal cell carcinoma of head and neck regions.
