Parasitic Infection: a possible cause of appendicitis

Introduction and Objectives:The aims of this retrospective study were to determine the prevalence of parasites insurgically removed appendices and to relate parasites to the presence of the histologicalfindings in the vermiform appendix.Materials and Methods:All 5201 appendices received in pathology department of Alborz hospital, Karaj ,Alborz,from January 2005 to January 2010 were included in the study.Discussion (findings) and conclusions:Of 5201 appendical specimen, 1428 were found to be normal while 3726 showedhistopathological evidence of acute inflammation and 28 cases classified as miscellaneous.Parasites were found on 19 samples (0.4%) and Enterobius vermicularis was the only parasitethat observed within the appendix. Parasite Infestation was more frequent in male (63%) thanin female (37%) patients. The age range was 7-40 years in males and 13-30 years infemales.Of E.vermicularis, 8 samples presented with acute appendicitis (42.1%) and 11samples found with no significant pathologic changes (57.9%).
