چکیده مقاله:
Teratomas are the most common extragonadal germ cell tumors of childhood, consisting oftissues from at least two of the three germ cell layers. They can occur in almost any region ofthe body and in any organ, but they are most commonly observed in the paraxial and midlinelocation. Involvement of head and neck occurs once in every 40,000 births.Teratoma of the head and neck constitutes less than 5% of all teratomas and usually arises inthe cervical and nasopharyngeal area. They develop in neonates and are associated withfeeding difficulty, airway obstruction and difficulty in swallowing. Oral teratomas, specifically arising from the tongue, are exceedingly rare and only 25 cases have beenreported in Medical English literature. Association of teratoma with congenital anonalies ispreviously reported. We present a 4 month old baby boy with polydactyly and multiple lingual masses. Patientalso had history of inguinal hernia and jaundice in the infancy. Preoperative diagnosis wasfibroma. Histological examination of the biopsy showed a mature teratoma, composed ofadipose tissue, skeletal muscle, mucin secreting glands, pilosebaceous structures and neuraltissue, covered with skin. Partial glossectomy was performed one month later which showedsimilar findings in the rest of the tongue. This case is presented due to rarity of the tongueteratoma.
