Diffiuse lipomatosis of thyroid: case report

We reported a rare case of a diffuse lipomatosis of nodular goiter in a 50-year-old womanwho presented with a 3-year history of midline neck swelling associated with recent onsetrespiratory distress and change in voice. Local examination showed a lobulated diffusethyroid enlargement. A total thyroidectomy was performed. The thyroid weighed 100 g and12x8x3 in size. Multiple sections from all tissue revealed diffuse infiltration of the stroma bymature adipose tissue. There was no evidence of amyloid deposits or papillary carcinoma. Afinal diagnosis of nodular goiter with diffuse lipomatosis of the thyroid gland was rendered.Lipomatosis or adenolipomatosis of the thyroid gland is an extremely rare condition. Thevarious differential diagnoses of fat in the thyroid include benign entities like amyloid goiter,adenolipoma, lymphocytic thyroiditis, intrathyroid thymic or parathyroid lipoma andmalignant tumors like liposarcoma and encapsulated papillary carcinoma. Adequate clinicaldetails and a thorough histopathological examination are mandatory for diagnosis.
