چکیده مقاله:

Background and aim:Ameloblastoma is the most common epithelial odontogenic tumor. Despite the low incidencein the oral lesions, it is necessary to detect it properly because a few of these lesions arelocally invasive and result in recurrence and malignancy. The aim of this study was todetermine the frequency, forms and tumor classification in patients who referred to MashhadDental School.Materials and Methods:This descriptive, cross -sectional study was performed on case records of patients withAmeloblastoma since 1971 to 2010. Age, gender, location of the lesion, histological type andrelationship between clinical and histopathologic diagnosis were collected from patients’record and were analyzed by SPSS.Results:Odontogenic tumors had frequency of 2.08% among all lesions and Ameloblastoma with 88samples had the most prevalence (41.5%). regarding gender, 60% of samples occurred inmale and mean age of studied patients was 33.02± 15.74 years. The location of the tumorshowed that 82 cases of tumors (93.2%) were located in mandible, 3 cases (3.4%) in maxillaand 3 cases in soft tissue (3.4%). Evaluating biologic behavior of tumors showed 85 caseswere (96.6%) benign and 3cases (3.4%) were malignant. Among the benign tumors, 62(72.9%) cases were conventional, 20 cases were (23.5%) unicyctic and 3 were (3.6%)peripheral type. Conclusions:According to the results of this study, Ameloblastoma was the most common odontogenictumor, which was more frequent in male, in mandible and in the third decade of life withlittle malignant tendency. Our findings confirm worldwide results although there is somedifference, especially in histological subtypes (more plexiform).
