چکیده مقاله:
Introduction:Semen analysis is one of the simplest and most basic ways to evaluate infertility in men. Itsresults are interpreted using the reference values provided by the World Health Organization. But given the influence of racial, genetic and environmental factors, spermogram results arediverse among various populations. So we arranged this study to determine reference range ofspermogram indices in iranian population. Methods:The study population included all non-vasectomy men referred to laboratory of Hazrat-Rasulhospital and a private laboratory for semen analysis during April 2005 to December 2010.The sampling method was census and sample size was 9094. Data on age, sperm density, semen PH, percent of normal morphology, Viability and motility of sperms were collectedand then data were analyzed using statistical software. Results:The mean age of subjects was 30.56 ± 6.9 years (16-77 years). Mean sperm density was93.08 ± 42.4 million per ml (1-215 million per ml), semen PH 8.12 ± 0.2 (7.5 - 9), normalsperm morphology 60.58 ± 11.9 percent (25-87 percent), viability of sperms 70.12 ± 12.2percent (18-99 percent), motility of 30 minutes after ejaculation 67.35± 11.8 percent (40-95percent), and grade A motility was 36.17 ± 16.9 percent (0-95 percent). Considering thelower limits (5% percentile) as reference values in subjects, spermogram values were asfollows: sperm density of 15 million sperm per ml; PH of semen 8; percentage of sperm withnormal morphology 39 percent, percent of sperm viability 46%, percentage of progressivesperm motility (Grade A and B) 20%.Conclusion:The reference range of some spermogram parameters in our study was lower than thereference range provided by WHO. In total, more study on providing an appropriate referencerange of spermogram in our population is recommended.
