چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Thyroid disease is common in young women especially during pregnancy andpostpartum period and may be a factor in reproductive dysfunction. However adequately treatedthis disorder is associated with successful fetal/neonatal and maternal outcome. The involvedmechanisms were as following: immunologic modification, relative iodine deficiency, changesof thyroid hormone metabolism and stimulating effect of human chorionic gonadotrophin onTSH receptor. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of thyroid diseasesamong pregnant women, in the Kosar Hospital. Methods and materials: This was a cross-sectional and descriptive study conducted among the67 pregnant women in first trimester that referred from prenatal clinic of the Kosar Hospital(during March 2005 to March 2012) with suspicious clinical manifestations of thyroiddysfunction. They were examined with respect to history, physical state and thyroid functiontests (enzyme linked immunoassay, ELISA).Both descriptive and statistical analysis methodswere applied. Results: During the study period a total of 67 pregnant women (mean age 24.1±/2.7 years, range: 19_/39 years) were referred. Most common symptoms were palpitation and dyspnea. Outof 67, 10(15%) had hypothyroidism and 13(19.4%) had hyperthyroidism. Family history ofthyroid dysfunction was present in 9 out of 67pateints and pregnancy induced hypertension wasseen in six patients. Diffuse goiter was found in 16 patients with normal thyroid function tests. Conclusion: we have found that the incidence of thyroid diseases during pregnancy in ourpopulation is similar to other parts. Due to adverse perinatal outcome, maternal complicationsand high rate of caesarian section as an indication for fatel distress, universal screening ofthyroid diseases should be considered. However, this screening must be done early in pregnancyperiod.
