In Ian McEwan’s Atonement, Briony Tallis relates how by falsely identifying Robbie Turner as the man who raped her cousin, she ruined his and her own sister’s lives. Believing her perception to be warped by the romantic ideals she had aspired to, she tries to reconnect to reality by enrolling as a nurse at a London hospital, and writing an atonement that would reveal the real culprits to the public. By analyzing the discrepancies inherent in Briony’s atonement, this article attempts to show that she is not yet rid of her romantic ideals, and her desire to control and write real life as a romantic fiction still possesses her. In trying to hold on to this authorial power, she goes so far as to create an alternative happy ending for Cecilia and Robbie, and accuse Paul of rape despite lack of conclusive evidence. This article aims to show how Briony’s desire to create a traditional tale turns her into an unreliable naarator, and blinds her to the probable culpabilityof Danny Hardman, leading her to create evidence against Paul Marshall as a way of molding him into the ideal villain
