Microcephaly in private and university hospitals

Introduction: Microcephaly is defined as a head circumference less than 3 standards deviation below the mean.In order to compare growth pattern of newborn in university and private hospital this study was done.Methods: During 10 days since 23 Dec 2017 all newborn delivered in Imam Reza Hospital (university) and SinaHospital (Private) included in the study. Growth pattern of newborn include head circumferences, weight andlength were measured. Then data compared between 2 hospitals by Man-Whitney test.Results: During the study 168 newborns delivered in Imam Reza hospital and 139 ones in Sina hospital. Meanbirth weight, head circumferences, and length were 3134.2 ± 532.4, 34.9±1.9 and 49.4±3 in Imam Reza and3171.7±515.9, 34.7±1.7 and 50.3±2.3 in Sina hospital respectively. There was one case of microcephaly in Sinahospital (1 in 1000 live birth) with no anyone in Imam Reza hospital. There were no significant differencebetween 2 groups in birth weight and head circumference but length was significantly in private more thanuniversity one (P= 0.001)Conclusion: This study showed no difference in head size in 2 groups but the babies in private hospital weretaller significantly because their mothers have higher social economic state.
