Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and is a leading cause of cancer related deaths in Iran and worldwide.Cholesterol has important role in the increased tumor formation. Changes in the levels of cholesterol as lipid are important clinically. The aim of the present study was to investigate the total cholesterol (TC) level of in the serum of patients affected with breast cancer. Materials and Methods: 38 healthy women as control group whit 38 women newly diagnosed whit breast cancer were studied as target group. Healthy subjects age 39/61±0/926 and breast cancer patients were 40/78±0/847 years old. Blood samples from both groups were collected after overnight fasting and after separating the serum they were kept in -70 until day of examination. Total cholesterol levels of serum were estimated using Pars Azmoon commercial kit for evaluation of enzyme activity. ANOVA test was used to comparison of serum TC levels between two groups of participants in the SPSS11 software environment. Results and Discussion: In this study, a significant increase in the levels of total cholesterol was seen in breast cancer patients compared with control subjects(p<0.05). According to the results of this study can be concluded that there is a direct relationship between serum levels of TC with an increased risk ofbreast cancer .
