چکیده مقاله:
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Berberis vulgaris (BV) juice consumption on skinfold variables of patients with benign breast disease (BBD). SUBJECTS/METHODS: This parallel design, triple-blind, randomized and placebo controlled clinical trial was conducted on 85 eligible women diagnosed with BBD who recruited from Nour-Nejat hospital, Tabriz, Iran. Participants were randomly allocated into either intervention group who received BV juice (480 ml/day, n=44) or BV juice placebo group at the same time (480 ml/day, n=41). After a 7 day run-in period, treatments were administered for the duration of 8 weeks. Participants, care givers and those who assessed laboratory analyses were blinded to the assignments (IRCT registry no: IRCT2012110511335N2). RESULTS: The results showed that bicep significantly decreased from 1.69± 0.81 to 1.53±0.75 in BV group. A greater fall of tricep also was seen in intervention group. Results indicated that quatri decreased remarkably after 8 weeks of intervention (1.49±0.74 to 1.37±0.70). Femur and suprailac skinfold remarkably decreased both in the placebo and BV group. While subscapula decreased within placebo group. There was a decrease in MAMC skinfold variable in BV group, but it doesn’t reach to statically significant level CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that regular BV juice consumption might be effective to decrease skinfold variables in benign breast disease.
