Evaluation of cytotoxicity Effect of Camptothecin onLung Cancer Cell Line (A549)

Cancer is a group of more than 100 different diseases. Many components of medicinal plantshavebeenidentifiedthatpossesssubstantialanticancerousproperties.Thispromptedustoinvestigate the effect of Camptothecin derived from (Camptothecaacuminate)onthegrowthoflungcancercell line (A549). The A549 cell line were seeded in 96-well culture plates and then cytotoxiceffect of Camptothecin was studiedonA549celllineat24and48hrsbyNRUassays.Morphologicalstudies were also carried out using invert microscope. Data analysis showedthatCamptothecinhas cytotoxic effect on A549 cell line in 24,48 and 72hrs withIC50=0.19±0.2,0.16±0.2and 0.23 ±0.2μg/ml respectively.Howeverresultshowsnosignificantdifferencesininhibitionpercentageobservedbetween24,48and72hrsofA549cellsexposuretoCamptothecin.Morphologic alanalysisshowedsignificantdifferencebetweencontrolcells(A549cellsunexposedwithCamptothecin) and treated cells withCamptothecin.Inconclusion,ourfindingsindicatethatCamptothecinhas not time dependent cytotoxic effect onA549celllineandcouldbeexploitedaspotentialsourcefor drugs against lung cancer.
